Illustration of connected systems sharing data

Businesses often rely on more than one piece of software. A form collects an enquiry, a payment provider confirms a transaction, another system stores customer information and staff need a dependable record of what happened.

An API integration connects these steps. The goal isn't to move data for its own sake. It's to make sure the correct event leads to the correct action, even when an external service responds slowly or fails.

Examples of web integrations

Depending on access and compatibility, a project might involve payment notifications, appointment booking records, courier or delivery information, product feeds, email or messaging triggers and data submitted through website forms.

For ecommerce integrations specifically, see WooCommerce API development.

What we look at before development

Access

Does the provider supply a documented API or file feed? Are there permissions, charges, usage limits and a testing environment?

Data

What fields move, who owns them and what identifies a record uniquely?

Events

Does the system allow webhooks when something changes, or must another application ask for updates on a schedule?

Failure states

How will staff know whether an action succeeded, failed or needs to be retried? Can an event be received twice without creating a duplicate?

Privacy

Does the integration handle personal information? If so, access, retention and logging need appropriate controls for the business and applicable law.

Payments need careful handling

A customer returning to the 'thank you' page does not by itself prove that a payment succeeded. A secure integration should verify the transaction through the provider's supported methods and handle duplicate or delayed notifications.

The same principle applies beyond payments: a system should record an action as complete only when the relevant source can confirm it.

Support after launch

Third-party systems change. Authentication expires. Data formats can evolve. Integrations need documentation and a sensible approach to monitoring, errors and updates. The appropriate level of ongoing support depends on how important the connection is to the business.
