If you have a limited budget for search engine optimisation, your first priority should usually be the pages closest to an enquiry or sale. A new blog post might help, but an unclear service page can lose customers who were already looking for what you offer.
Here is a practical order for improving a smaller business website.
1. Write down what customers actually search for
Separate general information searches from buying searches. Someone looking for 'how much does a website cost' is researching. Someone looking for 'website designer Durban' may be closer to choosing a provider.
Both are useful, but the visitor expects different answers. Do not force a long pricing essay onto a service landing page or turn a cost guide into a page of sales claims.
2. Make the main service pages genuinely useful
Explain who the service is for, what is included, what affects scope, how the process works and what the customer should provide to get started. Use headings that help someone scan the content. Avoid copying the same introduction across every page.
If services differ substantially, give each one its own page. If they are just synonyms for one service, usually keep them together rather than creating competing near-duplicates.
3. Check what Search Console already shows
A page with impressions but few clicks may have several possible issues: its ranking may be too low, the title may not reflect the query, or its content may be less convincing than competing results. Compare the actual query, position and page before deciding what to change.
A page ranking around position 40 will not be fixed by changing only the meta description. It needs a more fundamental review of relevance, content, competitiveness and authority.
4. Help Google discover important pages
Use ordinary internal links from the homepage, services and relevant guides. Make sure useful pages are crawlable, have appropriate canonical URLs and are not unintentionally marked noindex.
Technical SEO helps search engines access and understand the website, but it cannot make irrelevant content useful.
5. Take local search seriously, if you're local
For eligible businesses, accurate information in Google Business Profile can support discovery. Explain real service areas and show genuine evidence of local relevance. Creating near-identical pages for every suburb is unlikely to help users.
6. Publish supporting guides with a purpose
Write articles when a customer needs a detailed explanation that does not belong on the commercial service page. A price guide, platform comparison, implementation checklist or genuinely useful troubleshooting article can earn attention and send interested readers toward a relevant service.
7. Measure enquiries, not just visits
Decide which actions matter: contact form submissions, calls, quote requests or orders. Track search impressions and clicks alongside qualified enquiries. A keyword that attracts many visitors but no useful business may be less valuable than a narrower commercial search.
What shouldn't you spend money on first?
Avoid buying hundreds of generic articles, duplicating every service page for every city or promising a particular Google ranking. Start by understanding what already appears in search and where the website fails to answer the user.
Google's people-first content guidance emphasises original, useful content written for visitors rather than mass publishing solely to manipulate rankings.
When to consider outside SEO help
If your business depends heavily on online enquiries, you may benefit from an organised search strategy and technical support. Ask what the work includes, which pages will be improved and how results will be measured. Be cautious of promises of instant or guaranteed first place.
